190 16V undercarriage pics.
 

Hi all,

I know a lot about the old Porsches and how they should look and what some sellers do to fool not so experienced buyers.

My question is, does this undercarriage look origial or "facelifted" to you? I have my doubts if that nice black color is just a fresh coat to hide something brown.

Looks like a "rattle can" facelift to me. Some undercoating spray and some silver metallic paint. Center resonator is missing from the exhaust also.

This is clearly NOT a US market car. Yes its been rattle canned.

Is the exterior paint color beige / light brown? Look at the trans tunnel near the drive shaft, lines on the right of pic show some brown also.

Between the tunnel and lines running top to bottom, there is a crease in the floor from running over something. ( also see scratch on plastic at bottom of pic. This isn't a big deal unless the floor was welded back together or there is other body damage from the car falling off the road. Look closely at the front control arms, oil pan ,bumper for damage.

Catalytic converter is missing as in cut out and pipe welded in, look at stubs and off angle pipe. ( not center resonator as another poster stated.)

There is a bit of oil on the trans cross member.

Follow scratch down floor, plastic cover and towards lower control arm inner pivot. The lower control arm has a plastic cover that looks cut very near the inner pivot. There also looks to be some plastic cover damage on the outer end as well.

With such a fresh aftermarket exhaust, I'd think it was damaged when car ran over something / fell off the road.

Rear brake rotors look new.

Not much interesting here, looks like a new brake hose.


Factory MB undercoat is rubber and is very good at hiding rust on it's own, poke around a bit for soft spots. There is nothing in the pics that I'd reject the car for.

I have a 16v, that is definitely a rattle can paint job. Agreed with 97 SL320, the factory undercoat probably hides rust better than this paint job given its thickness.

Tjts1, how can you tell it is not a US market car?

By the way, that is a OEM style exhaust with the center resonator. What is missing is the catalytic convertor from the front downpipe.

You can always poke around down there with a magnet to see if there's sections of bondo.

Looks like right side floor pan was replaced, and they under coated both sides to match the coverup...

I would use and ice pick if he objects then he is hiding something if its all metal ice pick won't go through by gently pushing on floor boards. ice pick shows all the soft spots, quickly.

Thanks for the input guys. The car is black and an Italian import back to Germany. It does not have the booklets and that is also a dealbreaker to me.

Here is another, but expensive, car I am looking at...in Spain.
