Sun Roof 87 300D

Suddenly, out of the blue, the sunroof has irregularly began to stop about 2/3 open, and not respond to the switch.
After slight movement of the hex drive in the trunk, the roof will complete its retraction.

When closing the roof, the first 1/3 or so moves as expected, then will "load down" some, and sometimes stop, leaving the roof 2/3 or so open. Then may (but not reliably) close.

Does anyone recognize this as a symptom requiring lubrication?

Is there some proceedure to lubricate the mechanism?

Is the motor replacement, if necessary, a task a shade tree guy can tackle successfully?

Most of the time the cable goes bad from the sunroof shackle to the motor. This is a pretty simple ordeal . You have to get the sunroof far enough back to remove liner. Its just clips in the front but be careful not to bend the headliner. after removal of the liner you can disconnect the cable from the shackle. Then run the sunroof in the forward position and remove the cable. Look at it and see if it is bound up and not straight. If not then slide the sunroof forward and backward by hand if it moves freely well I would replace the motor if the cable is not bad .if the cable is bad make sure you get a new clip and inspect shackle for any wear.
Good luck

Thanks euro.
I cannot seem to find a place to pull the liner off. Any suggestions for me?

Slide the sunroof back far enough to get your head and a light in there. Look between the metal part on the sunroof and the liner. use a flathead and gently pry the liner down while looking with the light. You will see clips on the liner that just pop in the frame of the sunroof. Pop the clips loose and slide the liner towards the front of the vehicle. The liner will have to come out through the sunroof hole and out the top of the sunroof outside the car.
