Hi everyone, I recently discovered that my 91 420SEL's starter wouldn't turn the engine over anymore. The starter is good because I changed it 2 weeks ago. I then changed the battery with my Volvo's and still the same issue. Then I tried turning engine over by hand and no dice. I have the timing chain, 3 rails Meyle aluminum upgrade ready to be installed. I needed the timing chain loading tool or a valve spring compressor to take out the followers. I will fabricate the guide pin remover or if someone can lend theirs out, it would make this job easier. I have searched through this forum exhaustively then decided to post this. Please if anyone has the timing chain loader, valve spring compressor and the guide pin remover let me know. I would hate to buy these tools for just one job. Thanks

The guide pins can be removed using a bolt through a stack of washers.

Thanks Hirnbeiss, I did it like you described once 14 years ago. I was better off back then not to mention younger. My main worry is finding the timing chain loading tool. I mentioned the guide pin removal tool because the loader and pin removal tool are usually used together and if someone had the guide pin remover that would go great hand in hand for that job. My main concern and outreach is for the chain loader. Ich fahre auch :o

I got the impression from your first post that the engine will not turn. If this is the correct impression then you won't need the loading tool. If you can't turn the engine the tool won't work.

Yes, the engine doesn't turn by hand because the timing chain jumped luckily while I was starting the car and not driving. I was starting the car and suddenly it was like the battery just gave out. A thud/clank every time I turned the key. Upon trying to turn engine by hand I realized that it jumped teeth and that the starter and battery were good. I got scared so I decided to change the timing chain as well in addition to the 3 rails and tensioner. I will get the engine to turn by slowly backing off. I still have to find the post to make sure it's the driver side cam that usually lets the chain slip but I will get it to turn. Btw is it just in NY or the price of a OEM tensioner from dealer is in the $400-$500 range ? This car has only 140K on the engine and the 1988 560SEL before it had 248K on it's engine with original chain and rails. Rails weren't that bad with some grooving but the chain was stretched 2-3 inches if memory serves.

BTW guys I have more bad news. Someone broke into the car by breaking quarter window glass and then stealing the radio. A few days before that someone spilled a pint of purple paint all over the hood and left the can on the hood. I will post pictures when I go over there today to move the car from that particular parking spot. Very sad. A beautiful car like that.

Here are the pictures. Not really sure if I should be sad. It's kinda nice to still be in demand after 23 years. He knew what he was doing too. Went straight for the 2 Philips screws in the ashtray. Pulled out ashtray and then radio. One thing that makes me give him a appalling 4/10 is because he cut the wires instead of pulling out the plugs from the back of radio. I hate splicing wires. In the last picture I had inserted the ashtray back into dash. When I found car the ashtray was dangling by the passenger seat.

Ok, guys. Thanks for your help but I found a place online that rents the M0037. I ordered it from them with the guide pin puller. Wish me luck !
