HELP! to Attach shift rod lever end 220SEb

I need to attach new shift rod lever ends to the ball end control for the shift mech on my 1962 220SEb. The insert in the Rod end appears to be nylon and the only way I see to do it is to put some vaseline on it and squeeze it over the ball with a Pliers etc. Any Help out there???
