300TE Rear Wheel Bearing - Replace Spindle Instead?
Need to replace the right rear wheel bearing on a 91 300TE non-4Matic and have thought about sourcing a used spindle assembly instead of replacing the bearing.
Would this be much of a time saving move? Would the rear suspension need to be realigned? Is the spindle assembly specific to the wagon only? What years fit? Does anyone have a spindle from a TE with parking brake shoes etc. in excellent condition for sale with 100,000 miles or so? If yes, what is the price? Thanks!!! |
Depending on how you plan to remove the bearing from the wheel carrier I don't see that much of a time benefit if you plan to press out the bearing with help of a hydraulic press. There is a special tool to do this job on the car - though I imagine that might be a right pain in the arse and it could be quicker to remove the wheel carrier and get it on a hydraulic press...
...so question is - do you have either a hydraulic press or the special tool? If you remove the wheel carrier then in principle you do not need to get the alignment adjusted (so long as you don't move the adjustment of the adjustable links) but it would be prudent to at least check the camber after the job had been done - you can do this with a spirit level as it should more or less be vertical. |
vs the on-car method with screw thpe bearing puller? Probably not significantly, if you have access to air tools. But, with a used one you are not getting a new bearing.
