transmission leak in 1991 560SEL
Just noticed a small transmission fluid leak in the 1991 560SEL. It appears to be coming from somewhere near the front center of the transmission. The engine is not smoking from any transmission fluid leaking onto the exhaust. The transmission is shifting normally, no problems. I'm looking for ideas on where to begin my search for the cause of this transmission fluid leak......

Probably the dreaded front pump seal. it happened to me once... 1300.... but I think they replaced the pump, too.... they said since they had the transmission out... it was a wise thing to do.....

Yeah, I have the same thing on my '91; a slight ooze out the bottom of the bellhousing at the front of the tranny, only when the weather gets cooler. Requires tranny removal, but then is pretty easy to remove the front cover and get to the seals. If it's working fine, but is slow going into reverse, might be a good time to go a bit further and replace the reverse soft plates - also pretty easy. If you are paying a shop to do all the work, might weigh the overall cost of a complete rebuild while it's out. Depends on mileage, will you keep it, how it's working now.

One other item, the car has synthetic transmission fluid in the tranny. Any possibilities that it could be the cause of the leakage? |
