W115 speedo help PLEASE
Mercedes w115 speedo and odometer not working, I've tried removing and lubricating the cluster side and the speed cable. Still none work? No noises or anything coming from them, also I opened speedo and added loctite to make sure the numbers aren't just spinning on shaft.. Any ideas?

Is the speedometer cable spinning when the driveshaft rotates?

Disconnect the cluster side of the cable. Move the car slowly while watching the end of the cable to see if it turns. I suspect it won't be turning. The other end goes to the transmission tailshaft. I believe it screws into the right side.

Ok wicked thanks! Is the other side at the front or rear of the vehicle? Thanks |
The cable should go through the firewall into the engine compartment and then run across and back to approximately under the back of the front passenger seat where it goes into the side of the transmission near the back end of it.
Hopefully someone reading this can post a picture of what I'm talking about. |

Thanks a lot for the help man! Been a huge help! Just took cluster off and stuck a match stick in the speedo and spun it clockwise and the needle was jumping up above 0mph to like 20mph depending on how rigorously I spun.. Does this narrow it down to being the cable? |
Lol. If you don't want to move the car to check, you can lift the back end and spin the tires while someone watches.

Rolled the car back and fowards today and the speedo cable didn't spin! Guess we've found the culprit then! |
Lol. Awesome! Well kind of. The hard part is always figuring it out. Where are you located? Maybe someone has one...

Haha Yh for sure! I didn't do loads of research before and ended up opening the cluster and servicing it all lol suppose it's done now anyway! I'm fro Leicester in the UK England mate, don't think anyone will be local to me :p contacted Afew places here and no1 has a speedo cable including a classic merc parts dealer :s |
When I needed a speedo cable for my 240D I had one made by a speedometer shop. However that shop is in Sparks, NV, which is a little far for you.

Are all w115 speedo cables different for each model? I have a 1975 w115 230.4 just wondering which other vehicles will fit? Thanks
|
Don't know, but I'm in california and have sold parts worldwide. Shipping does suck. Just sent a box to India that was probably the right size for a cable. $61 American.

EPC has two lengths listed for a w115 220d (is this your model?). Part 1155420207 is 1140mm long and 1155420307 is 1210mm long. I have no idea why two lengths are listed. They cost about $100 US from a US MB dealer.
The cables for a 230.4 could be the same as for a 220d, or could be much longer. EPC lists the 1140mm one, as well as 1750mm and 1860mm for that model. So I guess it could be the same, or it could be quite different. |
