Hello,

I am planning to become a first time MB owner soon, and have been looking at cars in the $12000 to $16000 range, particularly the W126's. My question is pretty general and regards the reliability of 140K mile cars of this class assuming they have been regularly serviced by a qualified MB mechanic.

Alternatively I have heard that the 300E is an exceptionally reliable and durable vehicle. My wife likes the size of the W126, but would I be better off from the standpoint of maintainence costs with a 300E.

Thanks,
Loren Jones

Because of the cost of rebuilding the 126 suspension and timming chain repairs, I would have to say that the 124 is the way to go. I love them! The things run forever and hold their value well. Check for the service history, though, for it is very important to get a well maintained one.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. What suspension problems do the 126's develop, and what sort of work is involved in the rebuild. I have read about the timing chain repairs in other places here. I would assume they apply to the 420 or 560, but would not apply to a 300SE for example?

Thanks again
Loren

Since the engine in both cars is the same maintence costs are almost idenical. The S-class is somewhat larger & offers the best that Mercedes had to offer at time of production. Repair costs are generaly higher on these cars than E-class. Allow yourself at least $600-1000 @ year for maint & repairs!!
