Thumbs down W126 Transmission Problem

I own a 1990 Mercedes 560SEC, when I first start the car and the engine and tranie are cold the transmission acts strange by shifting down to a lower gear, jerk back and forth and then clunck into the right gear and does that several times. All I have to do is stop the car, turn it off and re-start and it runs perfectly even if the motor and tranie are not at operating temps. What is my problem?

I suspect you have a kickdown problem, either switch a switch or the solenoid.

The V8's are nativly second gear start cars. They can be shifted down into first gear a number of ways.

1) By shifting the lever all the way down and over to the right
2) By pushing the pedal all the way to the floor and hitting the kickdown switch.

I would recommend disconnecting the switch that is behind the gas pedal and seeing how things go.

If that does nothing then crawl under the car and disconnect the kick down solenoid at the rear of the transmission and give it a try.
