W123 300D from Belgium

Hello all,

I bought a while ago a W123 1980 300D in the Netherlands.

I brought this car to Belgium.

There's something strange going on:

The "trip odometer" stops everytime at 29.9 miles: he doesn't go further: anybody familiar with this problem ?

The odometer itselfs works fine and the miles keep counting up... So I only have an issue with the "trip odometer"...

Thanks a lot !

Bart

Hi Bart!

Without actually looking at it directly my first guess would be that one of the gears is broken and might have a tooth missing on the tripometer. Stopping at 29.9 is very odd though.

Second guess is that something is slipping and not allowing all three digits to roll over.

Third guess is that the trip reset mechanism is somehow interfering with proper operation.

Another popular failure item is the lead gear on the odometer this typically manifests as lack of odometer mileage registration though.

Thanks for the plug parshoot1!

In the cars I have owned with odometer issues I have noticed that the trip meter will stop at .9 miles and then the entire odometer will fail. My 240D had this issue about 5 years ago and then it self healed and has worked ever since. I use the note app on my iPhone to track the miles on all of my cars and never touch the trip meter for fear of causing an issue

My '88 W124C odo mileage gear failed some years ago. I took it to an indy for replacement. They had a contact who repaired these and carried a bunch of replacements on hand ready to switch out for broken units. Guys like him are probably all over Europe. Just a thought, unless you like to do your own work.
