On my 1984 190E, when driving the automatic gear selector makes a rattaling sound that gets lounder as the RPM's increase. If I put slight hand pressure on the selector while driving it is quiet. I can't feel the selector vibrating. Any one have any ideas?

There is a white rubber bushing at each end of the shift selector rod. These bushings do fall apart. When that happens there is metal to metal contact! Have the shifter bushings replaced.

I've done this job before. On the front bushing (transmission lever) it is virtually impossible to get the new bushing in. There is simply too little clearance between the shift lever and the tunnel. Is there a special "trick" or tool which makes this job feasible (short of dropping the trans)?
I have to "cut" the bushing and "curl" it into the lever. Regards, KM |

I actually made a special tool to do this job in about 15 min. The tool is a one off though. It is made from a pair of Snap-On very long needle nose pliers.
