Ball Joint Removal Tool
I need to replace my balljoints on a 300TE. I have tried to figure out how the tool rental program works, but am at a loss in proceeding. Any one lend a hand on how the program works or if they have the proper tool source?
Thanks. |
The ones at the local auto parts places (advance, oreilley, autozone) require you to purchase and then will refund the full amount when you return it.

From what I've read on the forum, the units at Autozone etc. don't fit the 124s. If others have had success, I'll give it a try. Anyone?

If you can remove the control arm, just take it to a machine shop to have them press it out for you and press in the new one. It should only cost around $20 and much faster in my personal experience. I will never attempt that job again.

I thought about that, but that would also require a special spring compressor. Seems whichever way I go, I need special tools. I would prefer to locate the proper ball joint tool. Every time I expand the project, it only gets bigger and bigger until I run short of funds and expertise.

I got mine from Hands on tools. It's a Baum 129-0343 $230 delivered. Makes the actual removal and install of the ball joint a five minute job once the strut and steering knuckle are out of the way. Get the spring compressor also and replace the springs and rubber pads while your at it. And while the strut is out brake lines are easy to replace as are sway bar bushings. At this point are you going to put the old struts back in? It doesn't end!!

It can be done w/ the normal press but you have to grind on the spacer, I doubt Autozoo would appreciate that. Probably best to find the proper tool.
Gotta love those "special tools", can't make anything too easy to work on, then we wouldn't pay outrageous dealer prices. |
Removing the LCA will effect the alignment most likely and require a new alignment. In fact if there was any previous alignment done with the worn ball joint in place an alignment will likely be required. Disturbing the eccentric bolt on the LCA usually throws things out of whack enough to notice something even when you think you re-installed it back into its previous position.

I made my own press with two steel plates and strong threaded rod - I have changed a few of them now.
