my 420sel sunroof is very stuck

The sunroof on my 1990 420sel worked great right up until before winter. It started to close slowly, then sometimes it would be closing and all of a sudden it would go crooked and get stuck. Now its stuck in the closed position. It will still somewhat tilt but only the passenger side. How do you get the sunroof apart to repair it if it won't even open or what position do I have to get it to?

The motor for that is in the trunk. Check fuses.

All fuses are good. You can hear the motor trying to turn but the sunroof just won't move.

On older Benz

that have not had sunroof maintenance that is common this time of year.

Since it is closed, leave it alone until the weather warms. You will find it will then open enough for you to perform the needed maintenance. The jam is probably caused by old, stiffened grease or no grease at all.

You will have to pull the sunroof headliner (not difficult) and remove the cable. Then you can clean the old grease out/off of the cable, guide tubes and slides and relubricate.

Instructions, tools and the proper greases can be obtained from Mercedes source dot com as a kit. This is a needed maintenance job but not very often. Maybe every 5 or 10 years.

Well, I have bad news... I took the sunroof all apart today and found a badly bent and stuck transport bridge and both angular tilting arms are broken. It looks like I'm gonna be spending some money buying good used angular arms and a new transport bridge. Thankfully the motor and cable work perfectly but I'm still going to take the cable and motor out to clean, lubricate and adjust them.

Yayyy it's fixed. It took me about 7 hours though. I cleaned everything, replaced both angular arms, transport bridge then adjusted it all. Now it works perfectly. The hardest part was probably putting the headliner back in.
