Hella Headlight repair question

I had some water condensation on my passenger headlight. I took the whole unit out, popped the little plastic tabs that hold the glass and plastic bezel in place, removed the front lens and started to clean it with a cloth. As I am getting ready to reassemble I noticed that the glass was separating from the plastic bezel. One small push and the glass pops out. Ooops.

Seems it is held in place by a rubber gasket which locks the glass in place as it is pushed into the groove of the plastic bezel. I have new seals on order but they will take several days to get in. Does anyone have some ideas for a temporary fix? I was thinking of using a silicon sealant (like a caulking for windows) of some sort to hold it in place. My concern is removing the glass once I get the new seal in and being able to clean the caulk from the plastic groove.

Any other ideas? The glass will not even pretend to stay in place right now so I cannot drive with only one light.

Thanks

I applied a high quality black silicone on mine when I had same issue on w126. Worked excellent.

After I order the seals (ends up it was the seal behind the plastic bezel) I started to dig out what I thought was as a seal but ended up being the dried up adhesive. I went to home depot and bought some clear window caulk. Worked like a charm. Need to do the other head light now also.

Hopefully my indy was able to cancel the order other wise I'm on the hook for $50. Lesson learned.

yes, you can substitute with whatever caulking available as a means to an end.
many auto/headlight manufacturers use a butyl type sealant which is temperature
sensitive and reusable. kind of a plumber's putty like media. you pinch out a
dab and roll into rope and push into the groove. your hand temp softens it a
little. after you press the outer lens into the housing groove, the media molds
and forms around the fitting and returns to a harder putty density, effectively
forming a custom fitted gasket.

headlight retrofitters have also applied a bead of clear silicone RTV butyl to the
exterior (like tub surround use), thereby dbl sealing the fitting. both silicone
and putty are reasonably easy to remove for servicing later. neither is an
adhesive or glue.
