98 E300 722.609 transmission linkage replacement question
 

Referring to the attached pic do you remove pin 140 to be able to position 130 where item 45 can be replaced? I am trying to replace item 45 and the only way I see to do it would be to remove the pin. Any words of wisdom regarding removing the pin. This is the sealing connector on the cable to the gear shifter.

I have a new pin/o-ring coming. based on everything I have been able to come up with it looks like the pin just pushes out from inside the transmission.

to change the plil assembly - your original post is correct.

Took the opportunity to take some pics:). Gotta drop the pan to complete the job. Plan on having up to 4 quarts available to fill transmission up upon completion of the job and follow the transmission service procedure for that aspect of it.

Issue I was having was a leak from the black plastic connector where you see the white connector fastened to on the drivers side, lower rear of the transmission. Replacing it is a pretty simple job.

You can see the complete piece in the second picture showing where the boot has pulled away allowing it to leak.

From the outside, turn the white piece counterclockwise as you are looking towards the rear of the transmission (from the outside) and just pull it out. I have laid the old and new piece side by side to show what I am calling the connector. I think MB calls it a linkage, p/n 140 270 13 65. You will also need p/n 140 997 36 45 which is the o-ring for the pin (more later).

Here you can see where it is hooked up inside the transmission. There is no way to remove it without damaging something.

I removed the pin with a chisel and a small ball peen. Tap on the very end pushing it away from the transmission. It will pop out. MAKE SURE you hold onto the spring to keep from losing it. I went ahead and slipped it off of the section where it was secured to relief it.

After unhooking spring I used the chisel to punch it out. The next picture shows the pin with the o-ring. I replaced the o-ring as a preventive measure.

The manual calls for the outside of the pin to be caulked. I used Ultra Copper to fill it in because of how easy it is to remove Ultra Copper. I've also attached a pic showing what the outside of the pin looked like before I started.
