W124 dies when it reaches normal op temp
I have a 92 300e. After it warms up, it acts like it is leaned out (it pings or sometimes back fire through the air intake) then stalls when coming to a stop or in slow and go traffic. It's fine till it warms up. Good power etc.
This condition began by the car having poor acceleration after it warmed up. On acceleration it would ping or sometimes back fire through the air intake but did not stall as it does now. Now this condition has worsened to the point where it stalls and will not start till it cools down. Help please. Thanks in advance. |

Seems to be common symptoms for a failing or failed fuel distributor.
PRIOR to getting into that its worth checking your O2 sensor, connections are in front of the passenger seat. It looks like a pain to change but its actually not. A couple of the hoses are no fun. Take pics BEFORE you start so you have a proven road map to guide you. My replacement came from ebay.

Thanks for your reply. The check engine light does not come on. If it were the O2 sensor would it trip that code? I'll check it anyway and other sensors mentioned.
I like your Jefferson quote. Very true. Seems we're headed down that road. |

This sounds like a classic distributor cap failure for a classic 103 problem. Before you get wild and start throwing parts at this, just remove your cap and check for arc marks on the inside. These engines aren't know for CPS failure at all. Also, a plugged EGR pipe will set a fault code, but will not cause this problem that you have....I don't know if you're experiencing a misfire or if it's leaning out too much or loading up from being too rich. If this is the case, check your thermal injection switch at the back of the cylinder head.

Also check the crankshaft position sensor, the coolant temp sensor, and check that the EGR value is working. EGR tubing may also be plugged.

I was having a similar issue with a 1989 300te. It would run fine but once up to operating temp it would nearly stall out. I replaced the cap, rotor, new plugs, and new wires and fuel filter. All is well now with no more hesitation. Also not sure on your year model but there have been issues with engine wiring harnesses. I'm new to gasoline engines and have been primarily dealing with the w123 diesel.

Problem was the cap and rotor. They were in pretty bad shape. Replaced them and it runs very nicely now. Thanks to all for their help.
