Door strap.
 

The door strip on the 190 is making noise. At least I'm pretty sure it's the strap. Seems to be weather dependant. With the rain lately it has been pretty quiet. When it's dry out it seems to stick and make noise. I have no had the door apart but can they be lubed and if if so what's recomended? I was thinking thinking a Teflon or graphite based lube.

Any recomendations?

I would recommend having a look at the strap (door check, actually). The most common failure is when one of the ball bearings (there are several in the mechanism) gets loose from the indents and the door gets noisy or sticky when opening or closing. You'll need to pull the interior trim off the door and then carefully lift the door card out so that you don't break the plastic hooks on the inside of the card. If you do, a glue gun will reattach the hooks.

I would replace the door check in question. When mine became defective, it locked up in the open position and the door would not close. It happened on my 190E and the SLK. I replaced the front door checks on both cars.

oh yes thats a nasty surprise when they lock in the open position. The driver door gets most wear - so its not unusual for them to fail.

if you want to apply some grease then dont grease the tongue, the grease should be aimed at the cavity below and above the tongue so that the balls get a bit of grease.

Also make sure the water protection sleeves are installed on them, they are black plastic covers on the inside. If you are missing those then rainwater can get in them and destroy the grease eventually seizing the mechanicsm.

I guess I will have to add this to my to-do list. Have quite a few items I will be look at in a few weeks when I get some time off of work. That's assuming I can get my 'honey-do list under control.....
