w202 blower stopped blowin
 

Hey guys,
Weird thing... It was working one second, Ran in to the post office, came out and the A/C wouldnt kick on again. It doesnt blow at all. The buttons act like normal and light up and you can hear clicking under the dash as if its trying to do something. It just wont spin the fan at all. Not for the heater, Econo, AC.. nothing. The fuses are all OK too. I am suspecting that the fan just gave up her ghost but would it do that so quickly with no warning?

The fan is located under the passenger dash.

Pull the hush panel, then look up, there will be 2 white plastic clips that slide off to take the cabin air filter out. I don't recall if pulling these clips gets you access to the blower or it a few screws need to come out. The cabin filter is on the left and fan on the right.

Also, there are 3 wires one is power, one is ground and the small one is signal.

There is a electronic package ( finned ) that controls blower speed. A low voltage is fed to the small wire and the electronics vary the speed.

At least on my 97 C280 / 97 SL320 / 97 E320 , with the key on, holding the REST button for a few seconds puts the HVAC controller into data mode where you use the fan + and - buttons to scroll through the information. Somewhere you can view fan speed signal. From what I recall it is from 0 to 5 volts. You should also be able to read the voltage at the fan control plug.

Well I am pretty sure its the regulator mechanism.. this guy which sits right on the fan itself and its specific to 94 and 95 models

I measured voltage at the four pins going in to it. I get one ground, two hot, and a lower voltage which varies with each different fan setting but I get no sign of life from the fan. When I jumper the fan motor directly, It spins like a mofo so we know the fan will spin up just fine if told to do so. Its got to be it, right?

Yep, that should fix it as long as the blower didn't short to ground and take out the regulator.

Also, now would be a good time to lube the blower motor.

Like just a drop or two of oil? something light?

Yes, 10W or 20W non detergent as sometimes additives in regular motor oil can affect the brass / bronze. If you have some air compressor or hydraulic oil ( _not_ brake fluid ) that works fine. Though any oil is better than nothing. I'd stay away from WD 40 as it has minimal lubrication qualities.

I put some on the shaft, give it a spin then a bit more. The squirrel cage side is a bit more difficult,I dip a long thin rod / screwdriver dipped in oil then run the rod through the openings to contact the shaft. Keep oil away from the brushes / commutator.

The motor should coast to a stop not suddenly stop.
