....and you are changing the rear axle, why? When you turn on your ignition all of the dash light should light. Look for the ASR lamp. Not sure what ASD is but if you have it, it should light also.

Just ran a search on ASD. Still not sure if it is all wheel drive or an early version of SLS. Hope more knowledgeable members will help us.

ASR ( Acceleration Slip Regulation ) Generally has a wheel speed sensor at each wheel hub, some _might_ have a sensor at each side of the differential but I'm not sure.

ASD ( Anti Spin / Slip Differential ) has a 3/16" ish steel tube running to each side of the diff and a dual section power steering pump. This is a hydraulic locking differential.

Plain ABS and nothing else is 3 channel, one for each front wheel and one for both rear. The speed sensor is on the right side of the differential pinion.

Some tale tell signs to help narrow things down would be a tone wheel at the wheel bearing side of the axle joint.

Thanks guys. I knew there was someone out there who can help. On my '97 CL600 I have ESP, ADS and I think ASR. I'll have to look. I have a little shrine in the garage with a candle burning to the Mercedes gods in the hope that I never have any trouble with these systems. Changing the fluid in the reservoir and a new filter are mandatory. I labor under the delusion that Mercedes knew what they were doing when they designed/installed these systems and it is up to us to keep them in tip top shape.
