1989 300se R12 freon convertion
my car still blows cold. at some point I may need to charge system. can I convert to the new 134a? or can I use something else? I heard of freeze12 on ebay. says substitute for r12? thanks. can I do it myself? or a shop that specializes in this is best.

Best to have a shop do it as the system needs to be flushed of the R12 oil before installing 134a and 134a oil (not compatible). Then all O rings need to be replaced, the pressure switch, accumulator/receiver dryer, and gauge/fill fittings.

Don't convert!
Our cars were designed for R-12 and works best with R-12. Keep using R-12 for as long as you can. R-134 doesn't cool as effectively as R-12. It's a poor substitute for an R-12 system. Conversion is a lot more work and expense that you think. You'll also need to replace the hoses, since the R-134 molecules are smaller than R-12. Otherwise, you'll have leaks and need to re-charge next year, I'm told.

This. Few vehicles on the road use R12 and the price is pretty low. |
