1994 E320 harsh shifting
The shift points are where they should be and it holds gears fine but it always shifts as harsh as if I was at full throttle. Any ideas? I've confirmed there is not a vac leak and that the vac line is hooked up to the sensor on the driver's side of the transmission.
Its done this as long as I've had it as my beater but I'm trying to make it better. |
How is the condition of the modulator or its pin?
|
The controller under the hood or on the trans? The controller under the hood checks out visually and the connector seems fine. I haven't gone beyond testing the one one on the trans for vac leaks. Is there a good way to know its bad? I can't find a w124 this new in my local junkyard and will likely have to pay and wait for a part if I replace it.

PM me your email and I will send you the 722 factory repair manual.
On the driver side of the case is the vacuum modulator which is responsible for line pressure rise. High vacuum = softer shifts (normal acceleration), low vacuum = firmer shifts (heavy throttle or WOT). There is a pin behind the modulator that can fracture causing odd shifts and the modulator itself can also fail. Experienced both failures on MBs over the years. The modulator swap on the W124 is a PITA. It sells for about $60 and hopefully that is just your issue, but test it first! I am still trying to figure out a rock hard 2-3 on my 300E I just picked up, while the rest of the shifts are fine. I am leaning toward a failed accumulator. |
That sounds really weird with it being inconsistent like that.
And thinks I'll send you a PM |
Email sending as we speak.
Probably just toss a 400E valve body on the 300SEL for FGS then put the 300SEL's on the 300E as I put the 'Superior Transmission' shift kit in it and the shifting is perfect. |
