W140 Rear Left Window problem
The other day I rolled down my window and it did not want o roll back up, from either the console switch or the panel switch. I managed to pull it up and hold it in place, both switches will take it down but will not roll it up. I can hear the motor click once you hit the switch to roll it up but nothing happens.
Any one with any ideas? All other windows work fine Thanks in advance |
1992-1994 W140s S class cars had a defective part that attached the glass of the window to the control arm that raises it and lowers it.
This part is plastic and not very strong. The result: after regular use the part eventually brakes and has to be replaced by a newer designed part fitted to 1995-on models. Seen this happen in several W140s and usually the rear door windows tend to give more problems than the front. The only way to solve the problem is to access the control arm and change the plastic link. Good luck! A. Rosich S320, 1998 E320T, 1995 |
W140 is very common to have binding or broken rear window regulators.

Any ideas on how to remove the panel, or is it simple enough to figure out?
I consider my self mechanically inclined. Thanks |
Easy enough.
Two hidden screws are behind the woodgrain near the inner pull handle. That woodgrain is tricky. At the rear of the woodgrain, you slip in a butterknife at the bottom and slide it upwards to release the tabs.It then folds out from the rear. It may have another screw in the armrest going straight down from the top under a little cover. Remove the plastic trim at the door striker area. After the screws are removed, the door panel lifts up. Riveter
I had same problem with RR door. The regulator cable was damaged . I got part here at Fastline. Don't forget 5 rivets. I used the riveter from Harborfreight:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=41291 This is POS tool, but it did the job and the price was right - $12.99. Overnight shipping was more. |
Thanks everyone, I will try next weekend and see what happens.

A. Rosich is absolutely right!
A few time ago the exact same situation happen with me, and after removing the door panel I found out that the cause was indeed that small plastic part, It is very easy to fix you don't even have to buy a new one. Folgado 93 S500 |
Is your window fixed?
My 1992 500Sel just did the exact same thing yesterday.Any tricks to removing door panel, what was the fix? Thanks.P.S. its been raining and window will not roll up.

have same problem on rl window.
anyone have any pictures to show the plastic part and how to replace it??? |
My regulator was the problem, I bought one from FastLane and the instructions on this thread are great, about 45 minutes worth of work and $72 for the regulator and all done.
|
OH Yeah, you need a new motor/regulator. they come as a complete unit. i have replaced two of them in diferent cars of mine. you will need a rivet gun, but not a bad job. part cost about $150. good luck, mike 602 616 2974 phoenix.

replace right rear door glass....
Okay, I have been reading and reading all these posts. All you windows guys must know something about putting in new glass. I figured out how to get the door panel off and I know how to vacuum up chunks of glass....now I to put in new glass. The sticky fingered theives have hit me twice this month. Once they broke out my jeep window right in front of my home and then after a nice dinner at a great mexican restaurant in Arlington Texas I was hit again. I found a window at a junk yard....Soon to be a window pro.

Hi, How do you fix it without buying a new one. Thanks. |
um...that might be hard...
putting in new door glass without buyng a new piece of glass might be kinda hard. I don't think I kept all the little pieces of glass from the broken window. If I had, I guess I could have glued them all together, but it would be hard to see through. :rolleyes2

The rear windows of my 95 S420 don't respond properly to the switches after a couple of years (maybe longer) of inactivity. Lowering is not a problem but the movement is slow. I can raise the windows if I help the glass up. At the end of the travel there is a moment of what sounds like a gear slipping before the the motor stops. With the left rear window partially down, there is about 3 cm of vertical play in the glass. The right rear window is much more tightly in place.
Can someone help me with what the 'cheap' redesigned parts are called and possibly the part numbers? Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 ... $80K car full of brittle plastic gears! 87 300SDL ... $60K car with one brittle aluminum part :) |
The cheap plastic part just holds the window to the control arm. If this part fails your window will dismount from the control arm and will be stucked at the bottom of the door.
What you described on your 95 S 420 looks more like a control arm failure (very common failure on W140s, especially on rear windows) and/or window motor failure (due to an extended unused period of time). Any of these two case scenarios would be expensive to fix ($$$), unlike the cheap plastic part described originally on this post. |
That's good to know... and also not :(

att'n all:
someone mentioned that this plastic part problem was for '93 & '94's. i just tried to reset my windows from a two year nap and it sounds as if my '95 s500 rr window has broken the plastic as well.when i lowered it and then tried to raise it i thought i heard a crack(very quiet) and then it wouldn't go up.when i hit the button to put up the window i can hear a click of somesort and then nothing happens.
i'll get a better idea when i open it up but does this sound like the same thing? thanks |
If the glass moves independently of the regulator then the sliding jaw has probably failed. Typically the glass slips into the door when the sliding jaw gives. If you can move glass a few cm but no more or if it's firmly attached to the regulator then the problem is much less likely with the $10 sliding jaw and more likely with the $200 regulator :/
In my case I was able to rehabilitate the window by helping it up and down a few times. I'm an nth removed W140 owner. I can't see spending money on a regulator for a window I lower once a year and only to check that it works. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |
