mercedes 190e 2.6 transmission issue
 

My 1993 Mercedes 190e 2.6 auto transmission sometimes just revs in drive.
Then I put it in neutral and back into drive and it seems to work.
Does the shifter linkage need to be adjusted?
Or is there something else wrong?

It could be your shifter bushing is worn and so when you shift into D, it's actually in N. The bushing is a PITA to get to and there is little room to work with. I did mine using a pair of really long needle nose pliers. If you are able to drop the transmission that will definitely help.

But even if U have to drop the tranny, at least there is hopes that It is not a gear slipping, etc.

Keep in mind there are actually 2 bushings, one at each end of the rod. Replace both or you're probably wasting your time.

I have the Bergsma tool, it's pretty expensive but worth it if you are like me and have many cars.

Are you able to remove and replace the busing without dropping the transmission?
Kent Bergsma's video shows him dropping the transmission a bit.

You might have to on a W201, I didn't have to on a W116 or W123. All he probably did is loosen the transmission crossmember, which is like four 13mm bolts. If you want to rent the tool, it's available as I've found it lol. I'd go ahead and replace the shifter bushings on all of your Mercedes if you rent it. The bushings are like $2 each, two per car, there's also clips, like $1 each. Just shoot me a PM if you're interested, I may not be able to send it out quite yet as I may have another car to do here soon.

Worn bushings on my SDL would sometimes prevent engagement of D, even though the shifter was in the correct location. To compensate until I got the bushings replaced, I would usually shift to "3" then back to "D" to ensure it was in a forward gear. Sometimes that would result in being stuck in "3" instead of "D", but oh well, it was forward.

Replacing the bushings put an end to that misbehavior. Haven't had a wrong shift since.
