gearbox oil
 

hello all
I'm a new Merc owner, I bought a 95 180 sport with a leaking gearbox.
I have ordered a sump gasket and filter for the box, but I'm not sure what grade of oil to use for the refill.
I've been told it's either Dexron 2 or 3
Can anyone clarify the grade for me please, any assistance would be welcome

So, using my detective skills, I'll assume you're in the UK, and that the car is a W202 C-class. Next, we note that you ordered a filter, so will assume it is an automatic transmission. The 722.4 was used up until '96 (US model year nomenclature) and takes Dexron 3. The successor tranny, 722.6, (has a lockiing tab in place of the dipstick) uses a proprietary blend, more expensive.

If you're correct about the UK then I'd say the chances of a manual gearbox are greater.

Demographically speaking, a reasonable profiling assumption. However, we have the victim's statement that he needed a filter and gasket, neither of which are found on manual boxes.

Thanks for your input re the gearbox oil
Repairs and refill became urgent so I had to get the parts and oil from Mercedes Main dealer in Sheffield England
7 Litres of Oil at £11.58/Litre
Gasket and Filter about £20.00 Then labour at £40.00 (very cheap)
The difference in box performance is startling.
Always knew MB were good but for a 25 yr old car it is amazing.

Geoff30, Over here in the colonies it is "transmission fluid" and "transmission". A "gearbox" is only for manual transmissions, not automatic. I am NOT criticizing only pointing out the differences that might make future inquiries a little easier.
And lucky you! If my calcs are right it only cost $57USD for labor to service your transmission. God save the Queen :)
