1995 w124 E320 transmission fluid change - correct fluid?
It's killing me that I have to ask this, but what is the correct transmission fluid to use on a 1995 E320 w124 wagon. I've been searching looking for a definitive answer but am still left unsure. I think the MaxLife Dexron III/Mercon ATF I can get at my FLAPS is sufficient, but can someone confirm this for me?

That will work fine.

Maxlife Dex III is tried and true for over a decade now. 30k fluid and filter intervals, including the torque converter and you'll have no issues.
|
you can even use house brand ATF dex/merc and it will be fine and dandy in these gearboxes.

Is Dexron VI ok?
|
Yes but why?

D6 is superior to D3 with it's additives and extended life. Plus I have a few cases I paid $4 a quart for.
|
It's superior in a 4L60E but what authority says it's superior in a 722.3? Sure, I'd pour it in a beater 722.3 but I wouldn't risk it in a 722.6 or later box.

From all I read it's backward compatible. As an analogy, back in the '90's, SH or SJ was the latest motor oil spec but now it's SN which is better overall. Why wouldn't you use that instead of 20 year old oil technology in a older engine?
|
Because 20 year old technology has at least a 20 year track record. :)
The label on the AC Delco Dex VI jug I have says compatible with Dex III so pour away! Since this is an oil thread, "better overall" is subjective. Later formulations are more environment conscious which can compromise engine protection. I don't know how zinc helps engines but there's less and less of it in new and improved engine oil. The problem nowadays is that GM has discontinued the Dex III license so what you buy in the store is something resembling DexIII - but no guarantees. However if you want the real deal Dex III-H you can look into Allison Transmission fluids TES 389 spec. Ford's spec of Mercon V is also very close and is a very nice fluid to use in Dex III applications - only a few are licensed though like walmart or Warren lubes different brands - its fortified with skunk tail though, hold your breath when checking level on a hot car. |
Valvoline MaxLife ATF smells something awful. I put the 722.6 dipstick in a ziplock bag in the trunk for a couple of hours and I can smell it in the cabin a couple of days later.

If your transmission has been rebuilt or is in exemplary shape you can use Synthetic 236.10 spec.
If your transmission has lots of miles and a bit of discolouration in the fluid use the Dex III. I.M.H.O. and experience. |
