I had a similar problem that got progressively worse until the car would crank, but not start. It turned out to be an internal leak in the fuel accumulator. Search for a thread started by me: Fuel accumulator failure analysis, and run the simple acculumator leak test.

I still get the occasional starts and then stalls behavior, but I don't think there's anything wrong. This has been going on for years, and I just got into the habit of kicking the throttle a bit when it first starts, and with that procedure, it never stalls.
