I have looked through my instruction manuals but I have not found details on filling the hydraulic fluid for my suspension. I check the resevior and found that it was barely at the tip of the bottom of the dip stick. I wanted to know what is the procedure for filling it. Do I do it with the engine running or off? The manual did say that it holds 2 quarts but do I have to have the engine running to pump the fluid to the rear and give me the correct level on the dip stick. What other brands of fluid are compatible?

My experience with my 300 TDT (has hydraulic suspension as well) is to have the motor shut off, fill to max on Oil container, start vehicle and then check fluid and top off. My mechanic told me to only use the Mercedes certified hydraulic fluid to prevent seals from corroding.

Thanks Steve, the car is new to me and I get a hard thump when going over bumps and railroad tracks. I figured something had to be wrong because I could not imagine MB owners putting up with this. I hope that once I refill everything will be fine and return to a smooth ride.

You may want to check the rear shock for fluid leakage if refilling does not work. This is an expensive repair.

I doubt the hydro fluid will help, but if it does thats a bonus... The thump is usually a sway bar link end gone south.
