Seized Motor help needed
 

Hey guys! I am brand new to this forum and pretty much brand new to dealing with the om617. I am in the middle of doing a swap into a 92 Toyota Fourrunner, but ran into a huge problem. I had the swap to the point where I was going to start it up, but come to find out that my motor does not turn at all. I bought it running out of a 84 300d, and did a head gasket change and a timing chain replacement. So far I have verified that my timing chain is not bound up, oil pump is not bound up, and I did remove my head again, thinking at first that my timing may have gotten off and I bent a valve or something. I am at a total loss right now, so im not sure if you guys have ever ran across this but if you have any input that would be awesome. Thanks

How you tryna turn it, and did it turn when you had the head off?

If yes for #2, then not seized. Maybe pull the cam only and see if it turns then.

What transmission is the engine attached to? Could it be an improper fit jamming the flex plate or flywheel?

I tried to turn it with the head off too no luck. I got an adapter plate for it from doomsday diesel and had the factory r150f transmission bolted to it.

Darren0412, remove the transmission then try to turn the engine CW (when facing the front of the engine). If it turns OK, then you know the transmission is causing the problem and proceed accordingly.

So I just removed my transmission, everything seems to have the correct clearances and nothing is rubbing in the bell housing at all. Motor still will not turn! Do you guys have any ideas?

I am skeptical it was running at this point. Just for a reality check, how are you trying to rotate it? With a breaker bar and socket on the crank pulley nut?

Smething not matching up in the engine to the gear box ..

Did you lock the crank when you did the chain?

On a 240D, behind the injection pump timing chain gear, there is a spacer/flat washer style on the shaft that drives that gear. If that spacer was removed and the spacer left out that shaft will not turn. I'm guessing the 300D uses the same spacer.

So I just took the transmission off and now I got it to turn a tiny amount about and inch and it stops. Would this be a kinked timing chain?

Could be a bunched up chain but I doubt you would have been able to link it together if it was bunched up much. You may be able to drop the lower oil pan and see it bound up. Removing the upper pan would allow you to see a little more but it is a task.

You did see this motor run yourself correct?

Was replacing the chain what started the unable to turn situation?

Yeah I did see it run, i drove it to into my garage. When I did this pull off the lower oil pan I found some small bearings about 1/8". Got myself into a huge mess here

Just to condense some info here:

- You personally saw this engine run

- You took it apart

- installed an adapter plate

- Now it does not turn with a breaker bar with the trans off

Things I would look at are clearances between the flywheel and the block including any through bolts and stuff in the oil pan. The chain is not going to bind up if its around the cam or pulled taught. Even if the chain was bound up you would be able to turn in counter clockwise a little and unbind it.
