I almost feel stupid asking this, but I haven't figured out how to unlock the dipstick for the ATF in my 1983 300SD. Also, is there an advantage to using synthetic, or synthetic blend ATF? Thanks.

If it's anything like that on a 300E, the black plastic locking clamp (clamped to the tube) is hinged on the orange cap. Pull the black clamp away from the tube - the dipstick should be free. Hope this helps!

Use regular fluid I have seen no problems with it and I know it works.

Thanks to both for the reply. Another question though, my owner's manual says to use "ATF" but I'm not sure if this is the same as Dexron III, which is what I thought I should use, based on some postings on usenet. Am I ok using regular Dexron III or do I need to get the stuff marked "ATF"?
Thanks, Bob |

Dextron is the one you want. On the back it will say for Automatic Transmission Fluid IE ATF
