ESP, BAS, and occasional ABS.
 

So I have just gotten a 2002 C320 sportwagon with 154k miles on it for $955.
From all that i can tell the only thing wrong with it is the ESP light comes on everytime i turn on the car.. and the hatch sensor is messed up i assume because it says its open constantly.
anywho im more worried about the esp light, and occasional BAS light.
everywhere that i have read says the esp light is on due to a faulty Brake Light Switch which i have purchased from my local dealer.
from what i read i take the kick panel off under the dash and it should be down there on the pedal assembly or firewall? I cant find it on either. i call the dealer give them the vin and they say its there. but i for the life of me can not find it.
Could this specific model not have one? I have read that there was a specific year that did not have a brake light switch...
needless to say i need help, this is my first mercedes and i very much enjoy it. i want it to stay that way.lol

Type in the part number into the internet and look for a exploded view of the pedal area. The switch should make contact the the brake pedal arm so dig around a bit.

ESP , BAS , ABS are all interrelated and share electronics, ( Stability program , Brake assist , Antilock brakes ) You will need a scan tool that reads the ABS system to go farther. Once you get a list of codes, clear the computer then drive again until a light comes on they scan and see what you have.

yeah ive looked up the expanded view of the part, and i know where it is supposed to be.. but it isnt there. all i see is the boot at the top of the brake pedal, no wires no sensor.

also my friend has a Star scanner, which is how i found out for sure it was the brake light switch.. it said it was either that or the esp modual.

The traction system on your car probably uses one, or maybe two brake pressure sensors. You'll find them on the master cylinder............but you should check the fault codes before you start throwing parts at it.

You need to take the black plastic under dash hush panel down for better access.

In the pic, it looks like the switch plunger is the yellow thing just to the right of the lower spring end.

is there more than one plastic cover? because ive taken the main one off, and i suppose theres another one up near the steering column.:eek:

I don't know your car specifically, but most hush panels are 18" square, usually hold the OBD 2 port plug and sometimes a floor light. You should be able to see the bottom of the steering column and all sorts of other scary stuff once it is removed.
