1984 280e oil in bottom of in intake
my benz has 120k miles. car sat for many years. thought the engine was seized so I was going to part it out. well I got home and it turned over. with some work I got it running .
it burns oil. at first it was a lot of oil but has lessened signifactly its either the valve stem seals as every piece of rubber is bad on the car and it looks like every seal on engine is leaking. or its what ever is at the bottom of the intake that is toward the front of the engine. to get a good look down in there you have to pull the fuel assembly off. is there pvc system of some sort besides what you see on the valve cover that its sucking up oil and burning it that way. the valves do need to be adjusted but I will not adjust them until I find out why its burning oil. im stumped on this one. |

If the car sat for years and years, you could have stuck piston rings. Not only would that contribute to oil burning, but it would increase blowby pressure in the crankcase and force more oil out of the PCV line. Your car does have a PCV system, which is about the only way oil is going to wind up in the intake plenum. If it's really dry and crusty, you probably have leaking valve guide seals as well.
Some of the leaking may subside with use once oil touches all the important surfaces and makes them wet again. It also probably goes without saying, but are you sure the engine wasn't seized? If it was and you forced it, you may have scored cylinders or loose rings which would be an obvious source of crankcase pressure and oil consumption.

when I went to look at the car when I hooked up a battery the starter went clunk that's it. no turning over or anything. once it got home and we got it off the tow truck it turned over. maybe it was a stuck starter. he did have it sitting on grass for a while.
would a compression test help? the oil burning is a lot less then before. ive got 10w30 in there now but I was told I need 20w50 |
