W123 odometer problem

So the other day I took a long drive in my 280 and I noticed that my odometer stopped working. My speedometer works fine. I always thought they were connected and if one worked so did the other. So the day after it stopped working when I took it out it was working again but stopped after a couple miles and that's what it does now. When it's cold it works for a little then it just stops. Can that be fixed or do I have to replace the gauge cluster?

The odometer can be repaired.

The drive gears for the odometer tend to fail. There are multiple places out there that have replacement gears available. You must know the tooth count on the existing gears before ordering replacements.

I should have added that the repair can be done as DIY but needs some patience. The speedo head can be replaced with a known good used speedometer without replacing the entire cluster. If you go that route just make sure you match the part number of your speedo (shown on the bottom of the face of the speedo),. This is important as there are different W123 speedos depending on the rear axle ratio of the car).
