On my '93 2.3, it's to the left of the receiver/drier.

On my w126 I seem to recall it being down in the recess under the fusebox. I had to replace mine once. My indy told me not to replace it - to jumper it over. Its purpose I was told was to make a second (lower) speed for the aux fan. Jumping it over would have the effect of making it high speed only. Well I ignored my indy and decided to do it the 'right' way, and the damn thing only lasted a few months before it blew again. It was such a PITA to get to that I really wish I'd just jumpered it over. At any rate, your milage may vary but as far as I know there is no reason it can't be bypassed (jumpered).

before jumpering the resistor - make sure the wiring to the resistor is heavy enough to support the amp draw of the fan at full power.

In the W124, the low speed wires from the fusebox are quite thin and making them carry the full 25 amp load of the fans will burn them out, The full speed wiring is heavy and is screwed on the resistor out leg. (I actually saw a car with burnt wiring from doing the bypass mentioned)

If the resistor is not behaving, invest in a better one and move is somewhere else or mount it to the cars body with some good heatsink paste.
