Annual Fouled Distributor

I have a 1975 450SL that I only drive during the Spring/Summer/Fall. Every Spring the car starts to run a bit rough and eventually starts skipping and backfiring through the air cleaner. It is especially bad (would stall at an idle) when the engine is cold but still continues when hot. Not as bad when accelarating after rpm's are up past about 2,000.
I take it to a local mechanic very familiar with MB's and he pulls the distributor and cleans it's underneith and the car then runs fine. He says there is some sort of an oil seal that is leaking and the oil interferes with the distributor's function.
Any suggestions on how to cure this problem would be greatly appreciated.
