w126 rear brake anti-rattle clip screech

I replaced my 1983 380sel's rear brake discs, pads and hardware with Centric parts and was rewarded with a cyclical, metal-on-metal screeching sound while driving. After ruling out sticky calipers, parking brake shoes and wheel bearings, I realized the Centric rotors have part numbers stamped into their sides, and the anti-rattle clip was riding along the rotor and screeching on those part numbers like a turntable needle. I knocked down the part numbers with a sharpening stone and the screech is now heard only on turns and much fainter.

My question: Is the w126 rear brake anti-rattle clip / spring retainer supposed to make contact with the rotor? This could just be a poor aftermarket part quality problem.
