A 126 267 00 88 Not what I need..
 

This Part # comes from dealers computer and is the only refrence they have. It is for the hard plastic replacement cover for the (automatic trans.) shift gate - right there in the center console where all the window switches are located on a 126.
It was special ordered for my 1987 300SE euro, but does not fit.
The decaying (rubber ?) cover I have now is much smaller in size than the new one. So I am trying to find the real number- I know it was stamped on the part itself, but because of the decay, the number vanished.
Anyone know the REAL number ?

The part number you show is for item # 146 in the figure shown. This is for a US 300SE. Are any of the pieces you want in this picture:

That is indeed the part the dealer showed me - and ordered for my car. It is however too long ( at least a couple inches) for the shift gate opening it is intended to cover.
The original part in my Euro, is softer rubber (or rubber like) material that has a "Lip" all around. The lip slides underneath the opening - as opposed to the "pegs" part 146 has.
While the way it fastens may have changed with an upgraded part, size could not have- so I am still searching for the right part number.....
From your email I guess US version shiftgates vary in size from Euro's though it does not make any sense.

Some 124 bodys have the rubber insert made onto the center woodgrain.

I'd pull the center console woodgrain and look at the thing to see if the rubber was originally attached there.

My friend has one and we compared..

Right but, even tho 126's aint my specialty you might find the insert was attached to the woodgrain which means it'll be in the woodgrain fische, not the shifter fische. :-) The bad part is it might only be available with the woodgrain attached. :-(

The part number for the rubber ring you are looking for is 126 683 01 57, taken off the ring on a panel I have in the spare box. I also compared a US to Euro (I have an example of both) and both have the same part number.

I experiemented with the Euro panel and found that the ring is attached using only contact cement. I also checked PartsShop and FastLane, they do not stock the part, but that doesn't mean Phil can't get it. Might be worth a call to Phil first, see if he can source one. There are enough 126 owners here who could probably use a replacemnet (myself included) and if Phil can source them and get them in FastLane I bet they'd sell like hotcakes.

There is a chance they may only come as a complete assembly though :(

I am going back to the dealer. They should be able to swap & replace the mistaken order.
I had actually tried fastlane months ago, as well as other outlets and no one carried it - I was told several times this is a dealer only kind of a part ....

I am still puzzled though. There must have been some design change over the years, because the fische the dealer worked from as welll as the one steve attached here refer to # 146 as the part in question. Interesting eh!

My picture and the item 146 come from your part number. I am not sure what you are looking for or what item 146 is. If you are looking for the rubber lip that attaches to the wood, it comes with the wood as Mike pointed out.

The part number for a US version (with standard switch holes) is 126 680 40 75 and list from MB at 190.

Yes. I am definitely looking for that rubber lip that attaches to the wood panel. exactly that. The dealer parts department suggested and ordered the now famous item # 146.. (Which actually looks like that rubber lip-that is how I was fooled)
It did not occur to me ,or them for that matter to look for this part in the "wood panel" segment of the fische, a possibility joeP had mentioned as well .
So now that I have the correct info about what I am looking for, I hope to get it fixed asap.

i believe i might have someone for you to check with. my88 420sel has done the same thing kind of shrinking. i'm just starting to pull the console apart but sometime back i bought some stuff on ebay from a mercedes991. i spoke to them and he seemed to know exactly what i needed and he had it in stock. their phone number is 305-266-0507 in miami fla. good luck and let me know if it works out. i'll being looking to get one in a couple of weeks.
