w115 engine swap options?
 

I have 1975 240d with bad motor. Instead of rebuilding the OM616 or installing a used OM616 diesel engine. I wanna do something different thinking of swapping M112 engine and transmission from 2000 W202. Its a V6 gasoline engine with 5speed 722.6 automatic transmission.

I already have a complete donor car with perfectly running engine, so i will not have to go shop for engine,transmission, ecu, engine harness etc

What are the difficulities involved in doing a swap like this? Just want to get your guys opinion before i get serious about it.

Take various measuring sticks in hand; in a W114/115 chassis the width of the engine bay, and the location of the steering box and idler arm will be the primary determinants.
After those matters, the sump vs. crossmember location will require attention.

Then there’s electronics. Hopefully you can isolate the engine and transmission management systems from the CAN, DAS, EIS, etc. Standalone engine and transmission management are probably prohibitively costly. An early HFM M111 and 722.3/4 might be a more reasonable option.

Given the above, apparently it bears noting that a W115, even a gasser, is an entirely analog car; CAN gremlins, and similar creatures, are nowhere to be found.

Having owned and worked on one, it'd be either an OM617, or a GM V6 with a manual trans for me. I'm not sure if the 3800 with the supercharger would fit under the hood but I'd be measuring and pondering to see. I can't think of any compelling reason to go through the hassle of a modern Mercedes gas engine what with the degree of electronics. Maybe a sufficiently warmed over VW TDI.


Or, put modern EFI and ignition on an M110.

I had an M130 in my W114. When it worked right it was pretty nice. An M110 would be a little nicer, and a fairly easy swap. Not sure about the M112, though that sounds pretty doable as long as the engine fits without major mods.

I always thought the m110 was an odd match for a w114, highish rpm dual cam six in a midsize meandering along kinda sedan. Neat motor, liked it a lot(not the carb), but it was kinda high strung for the chassis imo.
