W115 loose rear suspension

Thanks in advance for any help.

I recently bought a 1974 300 D 4 speed. Today I took it out for its 1st long trip since it's been mine. When I give it gas the front of the car lunges to the left and when I let off it lunges to the right.

I have crawled under the car and inspected bushings visually they all look fine. Seems like something in the rear suspension is worn.

Are you hearing clunking as you go over bumps? I had clunks and the same accel./decel. shiftiness you describe in a '73 220D. LH rear control arm bushings were shot. I could grab and move that wheel around quite a bit.

W115 loose rear suspension

Very very common for the rear sway at links to fail and you get all kinds of slop in the rear end when that happens.

I'll check subframe bushings.

I do not feel any clunking at all and as I said they (bushings) all visually look good but I know that doesn't mean they are.

Next chance i get I will check the sway bar links.

Does anyone have a technique on checking the condition of these bushing?

Suspension components are popularly checked by using a crowbar and finding the right pry points.
