SL500 maintance cost
 

Hi,

I just bought a 98's SL500. Just wondering if anyone could advise me on where to get a lowest maintaince cost outside of MB dealership ( such as OIL CHANGE, BRAKE SERVICE etc....).Could this service be done just any garage?

You don't say where you are located or what your mechanical abilities are, but that's OK. You can beat the delaer labor costs by using an Independant Mercedes Tech. There is a forum called Good Shops, search through there see if any shops local to you are listed. Choose a Tech as you would a Doctor, someone you trust. A good Indie shop can do just about everything the dealer can, at a fraction of the cost.

The other alternative is to do the work yourself. That really cuts the labor costs, but isn't an option if one doesn't have the ability.

thanks for the advice, another question is that should I use premium gas all the time? and if I should use synthetic oil ? and how many thousand miles do I change oil w/ regular and w/ synthetic./?

Yep, use 92+ octane all the time. Your car can adjust for lower octane, but it will reduce performance and MPG. In the end, it's not good for the motor. Follow the guidlines per your owner's manual.

As for oil (dyno vs. synth), that's a big debate. Use the blue search button in the upper right hand corner of your screen and use key words such as oil, sythetic oil, etc., you'll find many posts -- hundreds!

There have been some heated debates on this subject, good info and darn entertaining! :)
