How many brake pad sensor are there
 

I was checking the brakes on my 2003 E320 that just turned over 98K miles. I've got a "BRAKE", - Brake Service, on my dash.


My brake pads in the front look great and the pads on the rear are less than halfway, so I'm good.


My question is now, How many brake pad sensors are supposed to be there? I have a sensor on both front pads but there is only one sensor on the passenger side rear brake pad. No sensor is on the drivers side rear pad.


Is that normal to have two in the front and one in the back?


Is there a brake sensor in the cars computer to tell you to check your brakes due to mileage?


My Range Rover check engine dash light came on at 82,500 miles. But I found out that the system just sends a reminder at 82,500 miles, nothing is wrong, it's just a reminder.


Does Mercedes have a mileage reminder other than "Service D" is due?

How’s the brake fluid level?

I’m not sure for your car in particular but I read later cars have fewer sensors.

If your car has SBC it might be telling you that you’re aprocahing the count limit. At some point the SBC alert turns red. There’s an SBC recall to check in case it’s an SBC issue.

Its normal to have one rear and two front sensors. But best get that checked as 2003 E320 would be an SBC car.

I just got a call from the Mercedes dealer, and the SBC needs to be replaced and the service manager said every cent would be covered, not cost to me!!!


Now just waiting for the parts to arrive at the dealer.

TheBishop, as far as the number of brake pad wear sensors on a given model year MB … the newer the vehicle the fewer brake pad wear sensors. Our 1995 E320 has a wear sensor on each of the 4 front brake pads, and as I recall there is one wear sensor per 2 rear brake pads. As I recall our 1998 E320 has a wear sensor on one of the inner front brake pads and a wear sensor on one of the inner rear brake pads. I chalk it up to production cost-savings.

SBC was enough of a problem that the dealers will now do free repairs for 25 years.

Picked up the E320 this morning. Everything is back to normal because Mercedes replaced the SBC unit for free under the extended brake system warranty.
Back in 2015 Mercedes replaced the brake reservoir and parts on the E320. My cost was about $1,600. At the time we didn't know about the new brake coverage. When we got the notice in the mail from Mercedes about I called the dealer and he said all I needed was the canceled bank check that I paid with.
Two weeks later I got a check from Mercedes for $1,600.

My 04 has brake wear sensors at all 4 wheels. The sensors on one side are triggered at 50% and the other side at 80 or 90% wear.
