Sunroof Cable Question

Bot a '93 300E for cheap to part out as I needed a bunch of parts for some other W124's I own. Was trying to figure out how to remove the whole sunroof from this 300E as it appears to be in good shape.

I got the sunroof unbolted and it is sitting/balancing on the front headrests. The cable for the sunroof is the next thing to figure out.

I got the cable unbolted from the sunroof tray. My googling for how to remove the cable because it has a butterfly attachment at one end, tells me that if I have power I can feed the cable out via the sunroof motor. Unfortunately I don't have power, and my googling tells me I have to manually crank the cable out. Is my google search correct that without power I have to go the manual crank route?

Of course!

Okay got it. Thanks.

Now the next question....what do you use to crank out the the cable? I found the gizmo in the trunk that looks like it's related to the sunroof.

The sunroof motor is normally mounted in the left side of the trunk. There should be a hex stud attached to the motor. The special tool found in the trunk is used to manually turn the sunroof motor.

True above. If the tool has been lost a wrench works but is slower and more difficult.

Followup questions:

#1--Where is the special tool located? Is it in the reddish clothe bag you usually find in the trunk with some other tools?

#2--I put a wrench on the white wheel on the motor and it broke in two. Is that the hex stud that you were talking about?

Thanks. DJ.

On W123 cars the special sunroof tool is located on the left plastic trunk liner. There is a unique slotted hole in the plastic liner which holds the Tool. If I remember correctly the tool is sort of an anodized goldish color. The W123 wagon does not have a sunroof motor as the sunroof is a manual crank type. Yes, the hex shaped shaft which is part of the sunroof motor is the manual crank to turn the motor.
