M102 hole in timing cover??

I have a 190E '92 with the 2.3 M102. I'm currently refreshing a bunch of things on the engine and decided to do a much-needed cleanup as the engine and engine bay were totally disgusting. After spraying degreaser and scrubbing the lower right (to the left of the balancer when looking at the engine) portion of the timing chain cover, I noticed a little hole:

Is this hole supposed to be there or is this broken? There are no other cracks or signs of impact nearby...
