W203 vacuum leak
Hey guys!
So I'm trying to help someone with their 2006 2.5 with 197,xxx miles. They get the p0171 and p0174 codes. I've been reading for the past week and it could be a multitude of things: MAF, o2 sensors, bad seam in the intake, cracked hose or the intake runner shaft seal. MAF and wideband o2 sensors seem responsive on live data but I cleaned the MAF anyway. While I was checking over things, I could hear the leak. I sprayed carb cleaner around just under the actuator for the driver side intake runner, pictured in the link inside the yellow box. https://i.imgur.com/hSkhaGt.jpg My question is, that looks like a vacuum port right under the drivers side actuator. Can anyone confirm that is vacuum and what it goes to? I can't see it in the car but I'll remove the secondary air pump and look and see if anything is cracked. Also, has anyone had an experience where the actuator itself is the cause of the leak? Lady is super nice, retired, fixed income and I'm just trying to save a couple bucks for her. I would feel like crap if I tossed a manifold on and come to fin out it's just a vacuum hose. Thanks guys! |

These vacuum actuators can definitely fail when the thin rubber diaphragm inside tears after exposure to heat, age, and years of cycles. You can use a vacuum pump equipped with a gauge to test each of the pods, but be careful to only apply a very small amount of vacuum and see if it holds. Applying too much vacuum will tear the diaphragm, and then you won't know if the pod was bad or if it was ruined by the test.
If it turns out that you need a new center vacuum actuator, our Intake Manifold Repair Kit 272 140 2401R-PRM contains an upgraded center vacuum pod that's equipped with a high-temp silicone diaphragm to better resist heat, cycling, and age hardening. Our repair kit also upgrades the center pivot rocker to aluminum with Delrin bushings (the OE rocker is all plastic), and upgrades the actuator rod to durable aluminum (the OE rod is plastic with a small cross section). Here's a video and a flyer explaining the kit. Pelican offers the repair kit here: https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/2721402401RPRMINT.htm?pn=272-140-24-01R-PRM-INT&bt=Y&fs=0&SVSVSI=5873
