W140 Wood Refinishing
 

Hello,

I have having difficulty removing the clear coat from the wood on my center console. I have completed this process on several W123 cars with really good results. I have tried a bunch of different strippers, MEK, Acetone with very poor results. I am concerned about damaging the laminated wood if I sand any further. Anybody have a product that has been effective removing this finish?

A warm solution of sulfuric acid dissolves cured epoxy after soaking. For small amounts of epoxy, repeatedly dropping sulfuric acid on the epoxy is a useful technique and doesn't require soaking. ... Heating above the Tg will soften the cured epoxy and allows de-bonding.
And or,
Take a rag and saturate it with paint stripper first. The chemicals used in paint strippers are formulated to not dissolve epoxy resin but rather melt it. Ball up the rag and put it on top of the residue. Hold it in place for a minute, and then quickly use the plastic scraper to work at the leftover adhesive.

I've done several W126 wood mid consols, with good result. I use an iron to heat up the clear coat, move it a little around on the same area and scrape of the warm lacquer. You have to take your time and stop immediately when you feel to much resistant, if you don't you will take off small pieces of laminate. It will take me about an hour to get the clear coat off.
