280SE steel wheels
I’ve recently purchased a 1972 280SE. It has the bundt alloys on it, but I would like to put on the color coded wheel covers. I’m having trouble finding the steel wheels. Does anyone know of a modern wheel that should mount properly? I was thinking about VW. Also, does it have to be the original steelie because of the way the hub cap mounts to it?
Thanks in advance. |

You want 66.5/66.6mm center bore. I think you will find Audi and VW wheels to have bores too small. I think that you can often buy a set for ~$300 or so and hubcaps can be bad for about $100 or so. That’s just been my experience. They might not be perfect at those prices, but should cut the mustard for a driver car.

If you are willing to build a set, I can get you started. I've got a steel 6J x 14H left over from returning my Euro R107 to almost stock. This wheel was stock on W123 1979 280E, p/n 1084001402. Believe it also applies to your 72. Very light surface rust and scratches. Will be perfect when prepared and painted. Runs true. $35 picked up in Middletown, Delaware.
