W124 transmission slipping
93 e300 3.2 with 722.3
When cold it’ll slip between gears a lil. When warm soffits fine. Could this be a simple fix of the modulator adjustment or is this a new trans coming in |
If the fluid is clean and full the seals are probably getting less pliable. If the fluid looks good I'd add Lucas Transmission Fix, others will disagree. I've had great results with it.
Good luck!!! |
How old is the fluid? If it's old or if the filter hasn't been replaced in the last 30K miles or so, I'd start there. The oil is thicker when cold and it could just be a simple issue of old oil + clogged filter.
On the topic of "Mechanic in a bottle additives" getting a bad wrap, I'll throw my experience in: My SDL had a really sloppy/crappy transmission in it and the yellow-bottle Trans-X really helped it out. Wasn't perfect, but it went from nearly undriveable with slow/hung/flaring shifts to totally acceptable. |
I just bought it like this. Owner said it has been doing it Solid for years without increasing. Fluid is clean and appears new. I’ll try a fluid and filter change .. and I’ll toss in some Lucas. I have a spare tranny but would rather not swap it out if I don’t have to

Correct Transmission fluid is dex lll?
|
Had great results with Redline, Mobil 1 and Valvoline Dex/Merc (by far the least expensive).
DexIII? I don't remember. I also tried to service my power steering at the same time with the same fluid. Good luck!!! |
I bought a 95 e320 wagon with slipping reverse gear and revived it successfully with redline seal saver, and it got a nice solid reverse that would back up strongly. But it would slip in forward gear if overfilled at all. Then I had to remove most of the fluid to very low..then add again to fill marks and it was okay again. Forward slipping caused lots of overheating but it never failed again.
Sold it after a crash in the ice/snow storm. Good luck! Used a bunch of Lucas stop slip with no results, but the redline was very effective. |
Redline d4 aft is what you guys use?
|
Yes. I"d choose the Redline Seal Saver first, I didn't know it existed.
Good luck!!! |
Which gears? It makes a difference. It could be one or both K accumulator springs.
With a new old car it's not a bad idea to start out with adjustment of both the bowden cable and the modulator, and do a fluid/filter change. |
