Strange New Hood Liner Question (with photo)

Just got a new hood liner for my 1992 300E from MercedesShop.com and it's not quite the part number I was expecting (ordered 124 682 07 26, got 124 680 00 25).

However, the size looks right, but it has some strange new features.

Here's my old hoodliner:

And here's my new hood liner. There's a strange foil area, and compressed square areas on the left and right, as seen in photo.

The foil area is stiff and the edges are folded into a cut in the foam. It looks like the gasket in the engine compartment will hit right in the middle of it (see indented line in old hoodliner) which seems like it would interfere with the seal, and/or work the foil loose.

Anybody replaced their hoodliner lately, and did you get something like this? It's geniune MB, and expensive ($67.00), so I'd like to get a correct replacement if it's wrong.

You got a turbodiesel hood pad. For a 1987 300D turbo W124.

Thank you! An obscure question answered in the middle of the night, minutes after posting, can't beat that. :)

Out of curiosity, what's the foil pad for?

omegabenz 06-19-2002 04:07 AM

Im up til like four reading forums haha.

The foil pad is for resisting heat at the turbo. The exhaust in your 300E goes down the exhaust manafolds and out underneith the car.

In the turbo diesels, it comes up from the cylinder head, to the turbo, then out down back to underneith and out of the car, so there is high heat concentration near the hoods surface.

Look at that webpage, you should be able to figure out what I am trying to say.

That makes sense, thanks again -- I owe you a beer! When you get to six I'll make good on it. :)

Actually if you look mercedesshop aholic thread, I think that I posted at like six am, maybe 545. I cant do it tonight, I have to get up early, like seven.

I'm nineteen, so I guess you can buy me some root beer. haha.

If they wont return your hood pad, just leave it on. Mostlikely you wont get it off in one piece anway, so id just leave it on incase one day you decide to turbo your car. =)

Hey man, its 5:30 am. Is this close enough to six? I couldnt sleep last night. I am about to go to a metal place that opens at six. Otherwise id post at six am so you can give me props.

Have a great day,

Yes, I meant six-pack, but may have to replace that with an A&W gift certificate so I don't go to jail. :)

Full six-pack of beer to anyone of legal drinking age that can solve my engine sudden death problem on this thread though! Solve it cheaply, and I'll make it German beer if you want. :)

FYI on the hood insulation -- Phil in Parts Shop said this one is the Mercedes specified substitute, and there are none of the original parts in the country. Since I think this one will cause problems (foil hitting the gasket in the engine partition) he's sending me an aftermarket one instead. Also solved my problems with a couple other parts -- one that was my fault and one theirs -- to my complete satisfaction and with no hassle. Great customer service in a time when that's scarce, highly recommended!

You can order a 500E one. That's what I did for my brothers 300E.

Ill take a look at the other fourm. I havent slept in 32 hours.

Got my replacement hoodliner glued in today, seems to be sticking so far.

Before I installed it I did a little gratuitous modification... got this dumb idea in my head and it cost me an extra couple hours by the time I was done.

But the straight-up hood feature on this car gets more comments from others than anything else, figured I should show the flag at the same time. :)
