Interchangeable gearboxes M104

Hi Guys.

I currently have a M104 3.2 which im in the process of turbo charging, at present its running a auto box which i believe is the 722.5 iv read that these are quite prone to failure once turbo'd earlier on? And are the weakest however i may be wrong.

The engine once installed will be running standalone management so no issues with the auto box wiring, im in the UK and wondered what gearboxes and flywheels are interchangeable? Im looking for around 350-400 bhp eventually and would like a box that could take that power.

Iv also read on here the 2.5 16v 190e gearbox is one of the strongest and i know these are quite readily available in the uk, failing that possibly a 300d box?
There are in the UK a lot of diesel manual boxes available at good prices so this is also an option?

Im new to the world of mercedes and picking things up along the way, so excuse me if some questions are basic mercedes knowledge

Any help is appreciated, Cheers.

Does anyone have any info? On what manual gearboxes are available for the M104? kompressor, dog leg? Or diesel...Cheers

I believe you can put any 722.3 behind a m104 and there’s also some of the 722.6 transmission. The manual trans from the slk will also bolt up

Transmissions, both manual & auto, which were originally used with engines whose model numbers begin 11x or 61x, do not match with engines whose model numbers begin 10x or 60x. The starter motor locations are on opposite sides, and the 10x & 60x engines are tilted to the right side.

Thanks Frank, Is there a guide or sticky anywhere that says which boxes fit which engines? Or which are interchangeable, may be handy for newbies such as myself when looking for options with a manual conversion.
