cluster removal

There is a tool called combi hook it goes into ends of instrument cluster , making sure they point in not out or you will tear the dash, you may be able to make them out of stiff wire , make an L shape at the ends , use them pointed inboard not outboard or you will rip the dash, undo the sppedo cable out of clip down by the lower column, and once you get the cluster out a couple inches , undo the speedo cable completely then you can pull the cluster out, you may need to remove the steering wheel with airbag if equiped

Another strange thing about this car (again a 1993 300TE w/3.2L M104 motor) is that the end of the ABS harness that is supposed to plug into the top of the ABS ECU does not actually fit the ECU socket correctly. The original ECU that is in the car and the replacement ECU I got the other day have a tooth at the engagement end of the plug like this:

But the end of the harness that is supposed to plug into this part of the ECU has no matching slot to engage with this tooth.

So in order to get the harness to actually plug into the ECU I have to undo the two screws that hold this aluminum piece onto the ECU and remove it so the toothed piece is not there.

I have called two different MB dealers to ask if the part number on the ECU matches with what my VIN number shows the car should have and they have confirmed the ECU (the original one and the replacement one) are correct for the car.

Today I finally received the CORRECT ABS ECU for the car and the damn ABS warning light on the dash WENT OUT!!!

Yahoo!

The ABS ECU that was in the car when I got it was a 013 545 85 32 and even though I called TWICE to the local MB dealer parts department with the car's VIN, they kept telling me this 8632 ECU was indeed listed for this car. The THIRD time I called back (spread out over two - three weeks) I finally said "look, the wiring harness plug in the car does NOT fit the 8632 ECU and I have been told by several people that I have the wrong ECU. Can you PLEASE check again?" And finally the parts guy said there were TWO ECUs listed for the car, the 8632 unit and a 5132 ECU. I did some research on ebay for photos of 5132 ECU plug sockets and it looked like they might just fit my ECU harness plug so I ordered one. Plugged it in today, started the car and the light went OUT!

So I just thought I would post an update here in case others ran into similar problems.

BTW, I spoke to the owner of the mechanic shop where this car sat for so many years and he swears he has no idea how the wrong ABS ECU ended up in the car.
