How to adjust transmission vacuum?

My 380sl shifts roughly after changing the vacuum switch on the tranny. I've played with it a bit but don't know what I am doing. Do you rotate the "paddle" left, right, a little, a lot-what?

In general, screwing the little "key" inside the rubber cap clockwise will make the shift quality harsher, turning it counterclockwise will make it shift softer.
Be sure to replace the rubber cap before the test drive.
